Hanukkah in the Street

WHAT: Candle-lighting of Hanukkah’s first night with a festival of lights

Join us for a special cultural and celebratory event filled with music, tradition, gastronomy, literature, art, history, games, workshops, story-telling and more!

Join our  Hanukkah in the Street Celebration with the Mallorquin general public in an open and inclusive way.

The festival will begin at 5pm with welcome speeches, the lighting of the first night and the blessings, and followed by a special Klezmer musical performance. There will be eight different stations that will be running activities and offering products simultaneously.

Venue:

Main Stage – Lighting of the first candle for the first night of Hanukkah by Rav Nissan ben Avraham, the rabbi of the Jewish community of the Balearic Islands. The new Klezmer music band from the Balearic Islands “Baba Ganoush” will perform a live concert.

Kiosk #1 – Jewish History of the Balearic Islands – La Sinagoga – kiosk with hanging information panels detailing the Jewish, Converso and Chueta history of Mallorca – contributed by the CJIB, hosted by President Ari Molina

Kiosk #2 – Book Store – La Llibreria – Book presentations and book sales by Miquel Segura Aguiló and Laura Miró Bonnín

Kiosk #3 – Judaica / La Joieria – Jewish Majorca’s kippot for sale along with jewelry designed by Diana Rotenberg

Kiosk #4 – Olive Oil / La Tafona –Products for sale with explanations about the connection between the medieval Jews and their descendants with the olive oil trade from Mallorca by local producers Oli Verderol (Joan Mayol) and OLIRIC (Miquel Coll)

Kiosk #5 – Create Your Own Hanukia popup book / La Cerería – Arts & Crafts workshop for all ages by Alfonsina Ramírez

Kiosk #6 – Dreidel Challenge / La Jugueteria – We will be making traditional dreidels (spinning tops) and playing with them! With gelt (chocolate coins)! by Uri Gershuni

Kiosk #7 – Story-telling / La biblioteca – Stories for children about Hanukkah and other Jewish holidays with Naty Lomas

Kiosk #8 – Sufganyiot / El Forn de la Socà – Complimentary jelly doughnut pastries available to taste that are traditional to the holiday by El Forn de la Socà

 

We will also have hanukkiot and candles available for purchase (5€ for each box) in order to celebrate the holiday.
